Simmental

The Simmental ( Freiburg Patois le Chebetô? / I ) is a valley in the western Bernese Oberland in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It extends from the steering to Gstaad approximately south-north direction (Upper Simmental ) to take from there to the valley entrance at Brodhüsi near Spiez a west-east orientation (low Simmental ). It includes the municipalities of steering, St. Stephan, Two Simmen, Gstaad, Oberwil, Därstetten, Erlenbach, Diemtigen and Brodhüsi. The valley is drained by the Simme.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) praised the Simmental on his travels as "the greenest valley in Europe ."

Various localities play an important role especially in the winter tourism in the Bernese Oberland, such as steering or two Simmen. From Zweisimmen is gained to the world famous resort of Gstaad and Château d'Oex further. Other transitions are the Jaun Pass, over which one passes from Gstaad from Bulle in the Canton of Fribourg, and the Hahnenmoospass that connects the steering with Adelboden.

A side valley of the Simmental is the Diemtigtal.
