Solute carrier family

SLC transporter is a collective term for about 48 families of human transport proteins ( so-called carrier or membrane proteins) with nearly 400 genes. Solute transported, charged and uncharged organic molecules, as well as inorganic ions may be.

The members of each family have with one another at least 20 percent homology. Individual families are facing each other on almost no sequence homology, the inclusion of a new SLC member is thus ruled on the biological function, not on the evolutionary development. A more general, or more taxa comprehensive classification is found in the TCDB ​​database. This leads most of the SLC families in addition to many other families as 2.Ax and is the official, supported by the IUBMB classification of transport proteins. The SLC gene nomenclature system was originally proposed by the Human Genome Organisation ( HUGO ) and is the basis for the official HUGO names of the genes that encode these proteins.

History

From a collaboration between Harvard Medical School and the University of Zurich have been since 1999 - organized by Matthias Hediger, Peter Meier abbot and Heini Murer - Meetings organized, dedicated to the scientific exchange on which the faszilativen and secondary active membrane transporters field and the current knowledge of transporter physiology, pathology and pharmacology gather. In 2004 was a special issue to these transporters in Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of Physiology are published.

Nomenclature

This gene family comprises 50 different families ( SLC1 -50) with so far a total of 365 genes that code for a specific transport protein. The nomenclature of the families numbered from 1 to 50, then to separate the number of each transporter of the numbers of families with alphabetic letters. A phylogenetic relationship was not considered because it is a list of human genes. This is the reason why in the current TCDB ​​classification no SLC superfamily is listed.
