History

The Frankish settlement Sondheim vdRhön was founded around 525. 789 was the first documentary mention. Until 1335 Sondheim was the most important place in Baringau and seat of the court cents. 1359 was the collection to the city, the municipal law was not perceived. Between 1230 and 1435 the town was under the Bishopric of Würzburg and then came to the office Lichtenberg, which until 1548 the county of Henneberg - Römhild and from 1555 belonged to different Ernestine duchies, most recently from 1741 to Saxe-Weimar- Eisenach. In 1808 the place was in the " enclave Ostheim ".
