State Park

A State Park ( literal German translation State Park, Spanish Parque Estado ) referred to in the United States of America and Mexico, natural and heritage- vulnerable areas, which were provided by the governments of the individual states under special protection. The corresponding reserves in Canada are called Provincial Park or Territorial Park and subject to the provinces and territories. Besides the fact that they are not under the control of the federal government, they differ from national parks in that they are much smaller and generally play a minor role for tourism.

United States

In the United States there are over all U.S. states distributed hundreds of state parks that can come close in size and quality in national parks, but sometimes also protect relatively insignificant areas. All U.S. states have a State Park Service, which is responsible for the administration and maintenance of such protected areas. Because the most important landscapes and sites of the United States are already under the management of the National Park Service are (NPS ) or similar facilities of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the selection criteria for protected areas at the national level, of course considerably lower. Only rarely such large areas like Adirondack, New York, or the Desert Anza -Borrego in California are protected by a State.

In contrast to the national parks and monumenten most of the state parks with tourists, therefore, plays a much smaller role. Apart from the fact that many of them purely as conservation areas - for example, along reservoirs - do not take account of interest and thus are more of a recreational destination for weekenders from the local area, are also incurred additional costs for most state parks visit. Since these protected areas are not part of the National Park System of the NPS, the popular with holidaymakers America the Beautiful Annual Pass ( Annual Pass ) is not recognized. In tourist attractions routes - such as in southern Utah, where bales national parks and monuments - - can benefit remarkable state parks such as the Dead Horse Point, however.

As a rule, can be expected for paid state parks with the presence of well kept gardens, sanitation and suitable picnic and overnight accommodations.
