Steffen Schleiermacher

Steffen Schleiermacher ( May 3, 1960 in Halle ( Saale) ) is a German composer, pianist and conductor.

Life

Steffen Schleiermacher is a descendant of the philosopher Friedrich Schleiermacher. He received piano lessons since 1966, attended from 1968 to 1978 the Stadtsingechor to hall and put his Abitur in 1978. From 1980 to 1985 he studied piano with Gerhard Erber, composition with Siegfried Thiele and Friedrich Schenker and conducting with Günter Blum Hagen. From 1984 to 1988 he was Head of the boy music of the Leipzig Academy of Music. After graduating he worked from 1986 to 1987 master class in composition with Friedrich Goldmann at the Academy of Arts in Berlin and in 1989/90, he completed a fellowship from the German Music Council postgraduate studies for piano with Aloys Kontarsky at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. Until 1988 he was also assistant for music theory and New Music in Leipzig.

Since 1988 he directs the concert series " Musica Nova " at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, in 1989 he founded the Ensemble Avantgarde 1993 to 2000, head of the January festival at the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, from 2000 to 2010 director of the festival " sound noise " at the Central German Broadcasting.

From 1989 concerts have taken him concert and lecture tours to many countries in Europe, America and the Far East, including with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the German Symphony Orchestra in Berlin, the Munich Philharmonic, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and other orchestras such as under Vladimir Ashkenasy, Ingo Metzmacher, Fabio Luisi and Vladimir Jurowski. About 60 recordings with various labels ( Hathut, WERGO, music production Dabringhaus & Grimm ), including the first recording of the complete piano works of John Cage.

Numerous commissions, among others, in recent times for the Bonn Opera ( " cocaine " 2004), the Gewandhaus Orchestra ( " antitype " in 2006, " The glow of the Singing Crystals " 2009), the Church Music Festival Oslo ( " Four Pieces to interpolate the Bach Mass" 2008), the WDR Symphony Orchestra ( " the invocation of drunken oasis " 2009), musikFabrik ( " the roar of the astonished echoes " 2009) and RIAS chamber Choir ( " Ataraxia " 2009).

Currently working on compositions for the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Orchestre Français des Jeunes, the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin and the Festival " pélerinage " Weimar.

Schleiermacher is a member of the Free Academy of the Arts Leipzig and the Saxon Academy of Arts.
