Geography

Steyregg is located on 259 m altitude in the lower Upper Austria, a few kilometers from the center of Upper Austria's capital Linz, right by the city adjacent to the other, the left side of the Danube, to the north of Linz suggests a loop here and then circles the community south.

History

First settlements in the area Steyregg there was, as evidenced by archaeological excavations, as early as the Neolithic period. Slavic grave finds suggest settlement during the early centuries CE.

In the middle ages a number of cities developed in geographically favorable places along the Danube, which gained as distribution points in the salt trade from the south to the north of great importance. For the year 1111 in one of these villages, Taversheim, a church has, the predecessor of the present parish church. The construction of a castle in Steyregg may have begun around the year 1150. This has been constantly expanded and often changed owners. In the 13th century the place Steyregg was raised to market and received a city charter in 1482. The city remained in the following centuries but always in the shadow of the City of Linz, which extends on the southern bank of the Danube. Steyregg remained a small city, which was largely dominated by the rural villages.

End of the 19th century was the construction of the Summerauer railway and the construction of a bridge over the Danube at a modest upturn. During the Second World War, the population Steyreggs had to suffer the immediate vicinity of the Hermann Goering Works in Linz, which were the target of numerous Allied bombing. It is located 3 ½ miles east of the center of Linz, and is located on the 260 m above sea level. A. Height at the northeast edge of the Linz field, 1 ½ miles north from the Danube. Here, the low terraces of the Donautalung raise the Mühlviertler outskirts.

  • Steyregg Castle: The castle was built by the Otto Karen in the 11th or 12th century. The expansion of the castle was carried out under the Jörgern at the end of the 16th century. Today the castle is privately owned and can be rented for events.
