Sumène

Sumene is a commune in the department of Gard of the Languedoc -Roussillon region with 1633 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) and is situated in the valley of the river Rieutord. It belongs to Arrondissement Le Vigan, the Local Government Association was founded in 1999 Cévennes Gangeoises et Suménoises and is capital of the canton Sumene.

History

Sumene became the 18th and 19th century thanks to the wool industry and the cooperage ( chestnut trees) and not least by the silk industry to an emerging industrial town. The hinterland also supplied spinning and hosiery from the silkworm, which were sold and processed. When the crisis began in the silk industry from 1850 onwards, and the place was affected by the decline of the industrial and commercial production.

Attractions

  • Sumene is known by the festival " Les Transes Cévenoles ", which on the last weekend in July, takes place every year.
  • The Grotte de la Baume Clauside is a cellar-like cave which was sealed at both ends with walls and the camisards during the religious wars served as a hiding place.
