Sylvère Maes

Sylvère Maes ( born August 27, 1909 in Gistel, † December 5, 1966 in Ostend ) was a Belgian racing cyclist.

Life

He belonged to the outstanding Belgian national team in the 1930s. With two victories in the Tour de France (1936 and 1939) he wore himself to this glorious phase. The victory in 1933 at the classic Paris -Roubaix considered to be another high point of his career.

Maes won the last Tour de France before the Second World War. After the war he reached fifth place in the Giro d' Italia in 1947 ( as a 37- year-old). In 1948, he ended his cycling career.
