Background

Townsend had the feeling that he had met with his previous 2000 album Physicist many fans on the head and decided to make a more personal and more honest album. The idea came to Townsend, as he and his band went one morning by Canada and decided to write an introspective album and dedicate it to his home country. The songwriting took place in Vancouver during the summer months of 2000. Townsend Terria produced with an album as a " highly illustrated stream of consciousness ". On the recordings Gene Hoglan on drums, Craig McFarland on bass and Jamie were involved Meyer on keyboards. The artwork was designed by Travis Smith, who had already worked for Psychotic Waltz, Iced Earth and Opeth.

Music

Terria was described as " melodic and atmospheric " with elements from the pop- rock and ambient coupled with typical Townsend hardness. Terria processed musical themes Townsend's earlier albums like on Ocean Machine: Biomech. Nevertheless, it is more subdued and " uses silence as a part of the music ." Townsend called Weens White Pepper as an inspiration for the album.

Publication

Terria was released in November 2001 in Townsend's independent label HevyDevy Records. In Canada it is marketed by HevyDevy, in Japan by Sony in Europe and North America by InsideOut. A limited double CD version was also released, which included a multimedia section with footage of Devin Townsend concert in Japan as well as audio commentary on the album in addition to the bonus track universal

As Michael Edele of laut.de he draws parallels to the American progressive metal band Tool.
