Tewfik Pasha

Tawfiq (Arabic توفيق, DMG Taufiq; Turkish Tevfik Pasha; * November 15, 1852 in Cairo, † January 7, 1892 in Helwan ) was 1879-1892 Khedive of Egypt.

Life

Tawfiq was born in 1852 as the eldest son of Ismail Pasha. He received in February 1879 after the violent overthrow of the government Nubar Pasha for a short time the presidency in Egypt in a new cabinet, taking over after deposition of his father on 26 June 1879, the government in Egypt.

Against the Ismail imposed international financial control of the country in 1881 developed the nationalist Urabi Movement. This turned against the dominant European influence and the autocratic government of the Khedive. Tawfiq turned to Great Britain, which occupied Egypt in 1882 and the movement reflected. The country remained occupied even after the suppression of the movement. The British rule in Egypt was represented by the General, who was an adviser to the Khedive, the actual ruler of the country. In the same year rule over the Sudan by the Mahdi uprising was lost.

Tawfiq died on 7 January 1892. Was succeeded by his eldest son, Abbas Hilmi II ( 1892-1914 ).
