Thammasat University

Thammasat University ( Thai: มหาวิทยาลัย ธรรมศาสตร์, RTGS: Mahawitthayalai Thammasat, pronunciation: [ t ʰ ammáʔsà ː t], translates as " University of the Law " or the " morality and ethics " ) in Bangkok is one of the most prestigious universities in Thailand. It was founded in 1934 and is known for its special role in the democratization of the country.

History

The university was founded in 1934 under the liberal politician and later Prime Minister Pridi Phanomyong decisive participation. They first had the name " University of the moral science and politics " ( Thai: มหาวิทยาลัยวิชาธรรมศาสตร์และการเมือง). Even today is called " University of the people" because they particularly endeavor to a higher education access for all people of the country. The law school already existed before the founding of Thammasat University. It had been founded in 1907 as the School of Law of the Ministry of Justice.

Since 1934, over 200,000 students have studied at the university, of which five Prime Minister of Thailand, several presidents of the Supreme Court, some members of parliament and senators or successful business people have become.

During the 1970s, Thammasat University was a center of pro-democracy student movement. She was a starting point of the popular uprising in October 1973, which led to the temporary end of the military dictatorship. King Bhumibol Adulyadej appointed the nonparty University Rector Sanya Dharmasakti, transitional prime minister and entrusted him with the drafting of a new, more liberal constitution.

Thammasat University, with its politically active student body and their new rector Puey Ungphakorn was an object of hatred for the political right, who looked at all progressive and left-wing efforts in support of communism. In August 1975, the militia of the Red buffalo attacked the Thammasat University and tried to burn down their buildings. After the ousted military dictator Thanom Kittikachorn had returned from exile in 1976 to Thailand, demonstrated again thousands of students and activists on the campus of Thammasat. The protests were brutally put down on October 6 in the massacre at Thammasat University and at Sanam Luang to the police and ultra-right militias. Numerous students from the University died.
