UCI Road World Championships

The UCI Road World Championships (English UCI Road World Championships ) are the world championships in road bicycle racing and the International Cycling Union UCI since 1921, held every year at different locations.

General

History

As a precursor of the Road World Championships of professionals was from 1922 the Grand Prix Wolber in France. There the best riders from Italy, France, Belgium and Switzerland met.

Categories

From 1921 to 1926, the Road World Championships for men were held exclusively for amateurs, from 1927 until the introduction of unit license after the 1995 season, then parallel for professionals and amateurs, since 1996 in parallel for Men Elite and U23 men. The World Championships of the women were first held in 1958, the Junior in 1975 and those of the juniors in 1989, the latter two, however, with the exception of the period from 1997 to 2004 at sites other than the events of the men.

Jersey

The currently reigning World Champion or the relevant reigning World Champion in road driving has the right and duty to the next World Championships the following year during all road races (excluding time trials ) to wear the jersey of the World Champion (rainbow jersey). The same applies for the award in the individual time trial rainbow jersey, to be worn in the following year in all time trials.

The rainbow jersey is white and has a wide horizontal stripes in the colors blue, red, black, yellow and green ( top to bottom ) to the chest on. The rainbow stripe is interrupted in the time trial version with a stylized clock. At the end of this year, former world champions and world champions are allowed to wear these colors as a thin stripe on the sleeve edge.

Time

Up to and including 1994 Road World Championships (except the events for juniors ) were held in late August, a few weeks after the Tour de France. Since late September or early October, the race held shortly before the end of the season. The current date is controversial, as many racing drivers and cyclists have already finished their season at this late date.

By 1995 Road and Track World Championships were held new date consecutively in the same country, sometimes in conjunction with the World Championships in indoor cycling. Since 1996, the World Championships will be awarded to different national associations. Road race

The road races were and are discharged at the Road World Championships in all the above categories. ITT

In 1994, the ITT was introduced as a second discipline for men, women and juniors, which has been established since 1996, also in the men's U23 and from 1998 in the Junior Women.

Team time trial
