The qualifiers for the finals of the European Football Championship Women were held in 2009 in the period from 18 November 2006 to October 2008. 45 at the beginning of the qualification UEFA's 52 members played by eleven starting places at the finals in Finland. The selection of the host is automatically qualified. For the first time took Azerbaijan, Luxembourg and Macedonia participated in a European Championship qualifier. No team reported the associations from Albania, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Moldova, San Marino and Cyprus, while Montenegro at the time of closing was not a UEFA member yet.

Mode

The qualification was held in three rounds. The first qualifying round disputed only the 20 weakest teams. They were divided into five groups of four teams each, the five participants playing off in mini-tournaments in the second qualifying round.

In the second qualifying round of the five group winners of the first round and the 25 seeded teams formed six groups of five teams. Within each group, each team played one home and one away match against each other. The group winners qualified directly for the final tournament of the European Championship.

In the third qualifying round determined the six runners-up and the four best third in the playoffs remaining five finals participants. For the calculation of the best third case found only the matches against the First, Second and Fourth of each group into account.

Tournament in Turkey. Northern Ireland was due to the direct comparison tournament winner.

Tournament in Sarajevo ( Bosnia - Herzegovina).

Group A3

Tournament in Luxembourg.

Group A4

Tournament in Romania.

Group A5

Tournament in Strumica (Macedonia).

For Israel, Northern Ireland, Romania, Slovakia and Wales had reached the second qualifying round.

In the 7-0 victory in Romania Sweden Victoria Svensson scored five goals alone, including a hat-trick within 13 minutes.

For the qualification of the four best third only the games against the First, Second and Fourth of their respective group are relevant.

Third qualifying round

The matches of the third qualifying round took place from 25 to 30 October 2008. At this round, the runners and the four best third spot participated. The four third group were randomly assigned to the four best runners-up spot, with the runners-up in the second leg had home advantage. Teams from the same group of the second qualifying round were not allowed to meet in the third qualifying round. The two worst runners-up spot, the Netherlands and Spain, had to compete against each other in each case. The draw was determined which team enjoying home advantage in the first leg.

During the draw, on October 6, 2008, the ten teams were divided into three pots:

  • Pot 1: Iceland, Italy, Russia, Ukraine ( four best runners-up spot )
  • Pot 2: Ireland, Scotland, Slovenia, Czech Republic ( four-point best group third parties)
  • Pot 3: Netherlands, Spain

Russia qualified on the away goals rule.
