Vysoká nad Kysucou

Vysoká nad Kysucou ( to 1927 Slovak only " Vysoká "; Hungarian Hegyeshely - to 1907 Viszoka and rarely Viszokamakó ) a place and a municipality in Okres Čadca of Žilinský kraj is in the far north of Slovakia with about 2,900 inhabitants.

Geography

The municipality is located in the upper Kysuca Valley in the traditional landscape Kysuca, between the mountains Turzovská highlands in the north and the Javorníky in the south. Vysoká nad Kysucou is 23 kilometers from Čadca.

Administratively, the town is divided into eight districts: Jedlovník, Nižný Kelčov, Semeteš, Vrchrieka, Vyšný Kelčov, Vysoká nad Kysucou, Zátoka and Zlámaná.

History

The town was founded during the Wallachian colonization of the area and was divided in the early 17th century from the territory of the neighboring commune of Turzovka. In 1619 the place is mentioned as Viszoka and belonged to the estate of Bytča. 1720 the place was referred to as Viszoka - Makov, due to the higher importance of the second hamlet, which ultimately spun off in 1895 to. The population engaged in cattle and sheep, besides also forestry in the surrounding mountains, making numerous small settlements ( Slow Kopanice ) emerged.

Due to the extreme poverty and little fertile soil, many residents are early emigrated as tinkers, peddlers or plumber in the world. By the end of the 19th century, the goal was low- Hungary. Since then, emigration was more common in the United States; American astronaut Eugene Cernan has its roots from Vysoká. In the 20th century, some residents found work not only in surrounding cities, but also in the coalfield Ostrava.

Until 1918, the place was in Trenčín county in the Kingdom of Hungary and came afterwards to the newly formed Czechoslovakia and Slovakia today. In the closing days of World War II 21 inhabitants were killed in the small settlement Semeteš by fascist troops.
