Wattwil

Wattwil is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Geography

The municipality lies halfway between Wil and wild house in the Toggenburg is measured by population the largest and fourth largest by area municipality in Toggenburg and is the main town of Toggenburg. Wattwil has an area of 44 km ² and 8'368 inhabitants (December 2011, prior to the merger with the community Krinau ). The village is located at about 610 m above sea level. M. an der Thur. Through the municipality runs the 60- kilometer Thurweg, a hiking trail along the Thur from Wil to wild house. The highest point is at Wattwil the Tweralpspitz with 1322 m above sea level. M.

The municipal area includes the villages Wattwil, crocheted and the hamlets or neighborhoods Bleiken, Scheftenau, Colorful, high- riser, Chrummbach / Heiterswil, Hummelwald, Schoenberg, Steintal, Laad, Ulisbach, Schmidberg and Hänsenberg and, since January 1, 2013 the village Krinau.

History

In the year 897 Wattwil was the term Wattinwilare ( the homestead of Watto ) was first mentioned. In the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, Wattwil was an important center for the textile industry.

Public transportation

Wattwil is a rail hub of the Toggenburg. It pervert the Südostbahn for light climbing Wil, by the eight -kilometer Ricken tunnel to Uznach -Rapperswil - Lucerne, for light trail -St. Gallen and Upper Toggenburg to Nesslau- Neu St. Johan.
