Winnipeg Monarchs (WHL)

The Winnipeg Monarchs were a Canadian ice hockey team from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The team played from 1967 to 1977 in one of the three highest Canadian Junior Hockey League, the Western Hockey League ( WHL).

History

The team was founded in 1967 under the name Winnipeg Jets as a franchise of the Western Hockey League. The Jets reached in the first two years of existence, each the playoff quarterfinals, and then two times the semi-finals. In 1973 was the change of name in Winnipeg clubs, most recently the team played in the 1976/77 season under the name of Winnipeg Monarchs. After the team had missed each to participate in the playoffs from 1971 to 1975, she was in the last two years of their existence even einemla in the playoff quarterfinals.

Prior to 1977/ 78, the Winnipeg Monarchs were from Calgary, Alberta, relocated and renamed in Calgary Wranglers. The Wranglers filled the gap that had the resettlement of the Calgary Centennials to Billings, Montana caused.
