Geography
The community is located south of the Elbe in the Lüneburg Heath. The village belongs since 1974 Samtgemeinde Bardowick.
History
The village was established at the end of the first millennium AD as a zweihöfiges Good on a Geest island at the mouth of Ilmenau in the Elbe. The first written mention is Wittorf in a kingdom deed of Henry II from November 2, 1004 under the name Uuitthorp, where Hermann Billung († 973) is attributed.
1926 MTV Wittorf was founded with the fields of football, marching band and gymnastics. In football, the most important game is in the derby against rivals from Handorf.
1938 Wittorf received its coat of arms with three local white fish on a red cross in a blue ribbon panel of the medieval family Wittorf that there had their headquarters.
Since 1955, the heath blossom festival takes place in Wittorf on the last weekend in August
Population Development
Wittorf has 1,475 inhabitants ( 2010) on an area of 11.99 km ². In 2004 there were 1210 inhabitants.

The municipality belongs to the Wittorf Parliament Constituency 49 Lüneburg and the Bundestag constituency 38 Lüchow -Dannenberg - Lüneburg.

By Wittorf district roads lead 46 (B - 404 - Wittorf Bardo Wick -A 39 ), 12 ( Wittorf - Barum ) and 31 ( Wittorf - Bardowick ). The town is served by the bus lines 5402 ( Winsen ( Luhe ) Rottorf -Handorf - Wittorf - Bardowick -Lüneburg ) and 5405 (marching eight- Tespe - Barum Wittorf - Bardowick -Lüneburg ), the Hamburg Transport Association at the regional transport network.
