Yampil, Khmelnytskyi Oblast

Jampil (Ukrainian Ямпіль; Russian Ямполь / Jampol, Polish Jampol, Yiddish יאמפאלא ) is an urban-type settlement in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast in Ukraine. The place is situated on the river Horyn and is located 80 km north- west of the Oblasthauptstadt Khmelnytsky.

The settlement council community include not only the actual settlement nor the villages Didkiwzi ( Дідківці ) Lepessiwka ( Лепесівка ) Noryliw ( Норилів ) and Pankiwzi ( Паньківці ).

History

Jampil was founded in 1535 and received a city charter in 1569 ( Magdeburg rights ). The roots of the Jewish community dates back to the 15th century, probably even further. Your most important rabbis were Reb Mechel, the "holy Magid " of Zloczow, his son Reb Josef von Jampol and the " Noda Bihuda " ( Rabbi Ezekiel Landau ).
