181st Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 181st Infantry Division ( ID 181 ) was a military major unit of the Wehrmacht in World War II.

Division history

The preparation of the 181st Infantry Division took place on 1 December 1939 in Braunschweig. On January 12, 1940, was expanded to a full division with first eight battalions.

First deployed the 181st ID from April 1940 while the company Weserübung in Norway. There, the Grenadier Regiment 349 was left for backup tasks, when the Division was transferred in September 1943 to Yugoslavia. At this time, the division consisted only of five battalions.

The Fusilier Regiment 334 was destroyed on 25 October and 18 November 1944 in Montenegro and had to be re-erected. 1945 became the 181st ID in Celje in Yugoslav captivity.

Structure

On October 15, 1942, the infantry regiments were renamed Grenadier regiments.
