161st Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 161st Infantry Division was a military major unit of the Wehrmacht.

Division history

The 161 ID was set up as a division of the 7th wave formation on the military training area Arys in the East Prussian Military District I ​​on 1 December 1939. By accessing the field replacement battalions 1, 11 and 21 on 28 December 1939, they reached full divisional strength. In the fall of 1940, several battalion rods were transferred to the Infantry Regiment 677 and replaced. As part of the 9th Army of Army Group Center in the 161 ID participated in the Eastern Front in 1941 in the battles near Bialystok, Smolensk and Wjasma. In the winter of 1941 they fought in the defensive battle of Klin in the north of Moscow. From December 1941 to October 1942 she was involved in the fighting position in the front arc of Rzhev. In November 1942, the IR 336 had to be canceled due to severe losses of up to a battalion and was re- formed in January 1943. In November 1943, 293 and ID 355 ID the Corps Division A were from the survivors of the 161 ID, is formed. On 27 July 1944, the 161 ID was set up in conjunction with the new Army Group South Ukraine and completely destroyed in August at the battle of encirclement of Jassy in Romania. The resolution of the division was made ​​on October 9, 1944. The few surviving remnants of the Division were integrated into the 15th ID and 76th ID.
