1958 DDR-Oberliga

The season in 1958 was the tenth edition of the DDR Oberliga. Champion for the first time the ASK Vorwärts Berlin. The season began on March 2, 1958, and ended on 23 November 1958.

Preseason

In its tenth year, the league had her picture in contrast to the premiere season changed visibly. None of the teams, in 1949 took up the game operation had to keep their name after this first in company sports teams (BSG ) and then partially in sports clubs (SC) were incorporated. Five of the 14 league teams from 1949 to 1958 had been able to keep in the top flight: Motor Zwickau, Turbine Erfurt, Leipzig locomotive, activist Brieske - Senftenberg and rotation Babelsberg. Added to this was the SC Chemie Halle- Leuna, who was staying temporarily.

In addition, the league has been dominated since the first season, from the south of the republic. By 1958, every champion came from the southern districts of the GDR. In addition, the entire north had recorded a total of only six appearances in the big leagues; alone had the county Karl- Marx-Stadt already 27 Without political intervention, such as the Degierungen Saxon teams to Berlin (forward and Dynamo ) and Rostock ( Empor ) would sport communities such as locomotive Stendal or rotation Babelsberg the only sporting bright spots in the center or north of the republic remained.

A further achievement gap existed between BSGen and SCs. Since the emergence of the SCs only these presented the champion and cup winner. At the start of the league in 1958 there were only two BSGen in the starting field.

Name Changes

During the season of SC Chemie Halle- Leuna with the SC Science Hall for SC Chemie Halle were merged. The football section of chemistry Halle- Leuna was the first team in the Oberliga, the gambling in the GDR League team of Science Hall joined the rest of the league season as SC Chemie Halle II.

Course of the season

As in the previous season the championship battle was decided two games remaining in the direct encounter between the two championship rivals. Here, the leader Vorwärts Berlin sat at home 4-0 against the Second Motor Jena and was characterized by an unassailable five -point lead in the lead. Jena had risen only two years previously and had twice changed the coach in season 1958. The player-coach Rolf Huefner followed on the second matchday Heinz Pönert, which in turn was replaced by a freshman in the summer, the decisive factor should dominate the East German football later: Georg Buschner. Under Buschner the team played a very good second half ( second best team ) and was surprisingly still in second place.

For forward it was the first of six championships and the start of a sustained era of success until 1970. After the club was initially started by growing, he dominated the second half confidently and gave no more from the standings after the 16th game day. This broke forward from the master of 1955 (transitional round ), 1956 and 1957 SC bismuth Karl -Marx-Stadt, the fourth. The strongest competitor was instead first rotation Leipzig, but the Saxons played a weak second half and only entered into tenth place. Besides Jena again surprised activist Brieske - Senftenberg in third place.

The decision on the descent fell on the final day in the distance duel between Turbine Erfurt, Progress Weissenfels and chemistry hall. Erfurt and White Rock had delivered in the penultimate round key points and hall way, the Cup Winners' Cup in 1956, still allows a chance to win the league. But even a 2-1 away win against the eventual Cup winners that year Einheit Dresden did not help chemistry and they had to dismount for the second time. However, Hall had an average of 16,538 spectators be the most popular of all Oberliga. They accompanied rotation Babelsberg in the second division. For rotation, it was after ten successful years of retirement from the league. After that, the team should never play again top notch.
