Background

As a result of the fatal accident of Lorenzo Bandini in the year before the harbor chicane of the Grand Prix circuit of Monaco was defused and the race distance was shortened from 100 to 80 rounds. Nevertheless, the Scuderia Ferrari did not come to the race, ostensibly because they held these security enhancements for not enough.

The Team Lotus announced two cars, which were piloted by Graham Hill and Jackie Oliver. The two Lotus 49 showed approaches aerodynamic modifications to the front and rear. These were the first signs of extensive developments that were to follow later in the season.

Race
