Background

The development of four-wheel drive Formula 1 car reached its peak. Four of these vehicles were reported for the Grand Prix of Great Britain, namely two Lotus 63, a Matra MS84 and a Mclaren M9A. However, the occupation of these vehicles changed over the course of the weekend several times, as there is hardly a driver was happy with the ride and the training results of the car.

The BRM factory team Owen Racing Organisation, which had the French Grand Prix two weeks earlier omitted due to disagreements within the company, returned with Tim Parnell as the new team manager after some restructuring back. Among other things, was the private team Reg Parnell Racing, which had denied the first three World Cup races this season with BRM vehicles, has been resolved. The resulting cropped driver Pedro Rodríguez occupied now a second Ferrari cockpit next to Chris Amon. The now modified BRM P139 was reported for John Surtees, while his teammate Jackie Oliver still drove the P133.

Jack Brabham had to continue to take a break due to injury. The proposed representation by Dan Gurney failed in the short term, so Jacky Ickx drove the single plant Brabham.

The privateer Joakim Bonnier first appeared in this season.

Training

Jackie Stewart, who led the world championship by a wide margin, was the favorite in the race weekend. In Saturday's training however, he had a violent accident in which his car was badly damaged. He then took over for the rest of the weekend the car his teammate Jean -Pierre Beltoise, so this had to be content with the immature MS84 -wheel drive vehicle.

Jochen Rindt set the fastest practice time before Stewart and Denis Hulme. Jacky Ickx and Chris Amon qualified for the second row, so five different vehicles were represented at the first five starting positions.

The reigning world champion Graham Hill qualified for the twelfth starting position and insisted on going into the race with a rear-engined Lotus 49. As the factory team had, however, only 63 provided the Lotus for him who with a private Lotus 49 An incoming Joakim Bonnier was persuaded to swap his car against Hills -wheel drive vehicle.

Race

Jackie Stewart took the lead, was the dominance of the recent France -GP though initially not repeat because it Jochen Rindt was equal time for much of the race. Rindt lost only towards the end by an unscheduled pit stop the connection, so Stewart but ultimately left unchallenged with a round of lay ahead of Jacky Ickx and Bruce McLaren and scored his fifth victory in the sixth race.

1 Graham Hill and Joakim Bonnier exchanged after training their cars, so Hill contested the race with Bonnier's Lotus 49B and Bonnier drove the reported actually for Hill Lotus 63. 2 Jackie Stewart drove the Matra MS84 with start number 30 only in the first practice. After an accident in the second session, in which the also reported for him MS80 had been damaged, he used henceforth the MS80 his teammate Jean -Pierre Beltoise. 3 Jean -Pierre Beltoise drove the Matra MS80 only in training, left him after his team-mate Jackie Stewart and denied the crucial qualifying round and the race with the MS84.
