Background

During the five-week break since the Grand Prix of Germany merely a non scoring for the World Cup Formula 1 race in Oulton Park was held, which was won by Brabham driver Jacky Ickx.

Significant changes in the driver's field were the return of Jack Brabham after several weeks of injury and the re- use of John Miles in the third factory Lotus to develop the Type 63. The privateer Joakim Bonnier decided against a further departure this season. Ferrari announced only with a cart, with the two drivers, namely Pedro Rodriguez and Ernesto Brambilla, attempted to qualify. Although it was a last year's model, this was achieved both drivers. Since no other vehicle was available, Brambilla had to do without for the start.

For Jackie Stewart and Jackie Oliver, two cars were reported to test it in training, but by both drivers -evaluated only with the respective emergency vehicles lap times were achieved.

Training

The four top-ranked training sat in four different vehicles. Jochen Rindt Lotus 49 in qualifying ahead of McLaren driver Denis Hulme and Jackie Stewart Matra and Piers Courage in used by Frank Williams customer Brabham.

Jochen Rindt was one of the drivers that the use of the usual front and rear wings gave up the high-speed Monza circuit. The on the grid standing next to him Denis Hulme decided, as well as about half of the drivers against this measure.

Race

Although Ferrari took home race only with sparse instrumentation, the stands were well filled. Exciting slipstream duels, in which eight drivers were involved developed at the tip. Besides Rindt, Hulme, Stewart and courage, between which the guide permanently changed, these were Graham Hill, Bruce McLaren, Jean -Pierre Beltoise and Jo Siffert. After Hulme, Siffert and courage were gradually failed in each case due to technical defects, remained a pentathlon at the top. Hills failure five laps to go the lead group reduced to four riders.

Even on the last lap Stewart lost his lead briefly at Rindt, however, took it a few corners later. In the last turn even Beltoise went briefly with a speed in excess lead but had to because of another arc drive than his opponents. The first four of the race finally crossed the finish line in 0.19 seconds. Thus, a record for the tightest finish line was set up, which, however, was in 1971 also undercut in Monza, when the first four were separated by only 0.18 seconds.

Although still three races were to be completed, Jackie Stewart secured his sixth victory after the previous eight races ahead of his first world title.
