Background

The field corresponded largely to that of the previous Grand Prix in Spain with the exception that Jochen Rindt had not yet recovered from his nose injury suffered there and was therefore represented by Richard Attwood.

In addition, for the first time the private team Antique Automobiles competed in this season and played with the driver Vic Elford the last Grand Prix participation of a Cooper racing car. For Silvio Moser, who used a private Brabham, it was also the first GP of the year, participation.

Training

After the first training session was imposed a ban on any wing in response to accidents and problems in the past Spain GP. The times of this first training, which had been completed yet with wings have been withdrawn and did not count for qualification. Contrary to the fears of some teams that coordinated with the aerodynamic aids cars without wings are hardly mobile, you simply stated slight time loss.

Jackie Stewart secured the first pole position of his career ahead of Chris Amon in the Ferrari and Matra his team-mate Jean -Pierre Beltoise.

Race

Stewart went from the lead into the first corner, followed closely by Amon. Behind Beltoise came under pressure by Graham Hill, who could pass in the third round at him. Within the first ten laps Stewart drove out a lead of ten seconds.

Meanwhile, John Surtees had to fight in the only moderately lit tunnel with a gearbox failure. Jack Brabham overlooked this and collided with him. Both fell out, but escaped unhurt. Amon and Beltoise, both were traveling in a promising position, dropped out due to technical problems in the first quarter of the race. Shortly after Beltoise had to give also the leading Stewart, so that both Matra - Ford were exactly excreted within two rounds with the same defect.

At the top of Hill was now twelve seconds ahead of Jacky Ickx and Piers Courage. As Ickx was forced to retire on lap 49 due to a suspension damage, Courage ended the race in second place and made therefore for an unexpected success for the private team of Frank Williams Racing Cars, which only earned his second Grand Prix use. Jo Siffert reached with its customer - Lotus as third goal.
