The Grand Prix of Sweden 1973 was held on 17 June at the Scandinavian Raceway in Anderstorp place and was the seventh race of the Formula 1 season 1973.

Background

The organizers were motivated among other things by the success of Ronnie Peterson, first perform a counting for the World Cup Grand Prix of Sweden.

The field was smaller than in the runs before because it did not make especially some small private teams, the damage incurred in Monaco on their vehicles to fix in time and travel to Sweden.

Ferrari waived again on Arturo Merzario and only reported a car for the Grand Prix. Instead, the locals Pure Wisell wanted to add the field in a privately entered March. It was the vehicle that had been driven in Monaco by David Purley.

Nanni Galli had declared its withdrawal from Formula 1 after the Monaco Grand Prix and was replaced for the remainder of the season in the second car of Frank Williams by changing drivers who had to each pay for their use. Tom BELSO received the cockpit for the Swedish GP and was thus the first Dane in Formula 1 because he could not raise the money for the start of the race, he had to abandon the race in spite of successful qualification.

Training

To the delight of the spectators local hero Ronnie Peterson qualified for the pole position. The first series he shared with François Cevert. The two counterparties with respect to the World Cup title, Emerson Fittipaldi and Jackie Stewart, formed the second row.

Race

Pure Wisell damaged his car in one of the warm up laps and could not compete accordingly.

After members of the GPDA had complained that some photographers were in dangerous positions on the track, the race was started with some delay.

Emerson Fittipaldi managed to the best start, which brought him into second place behind his teammate Peterson. Cevert, Stewart, Reutemann and Hulme followed, and between the latter two in the fourth round changed the placement.

This order remained unchanged until Stewart on lap 34 overtook Cevert and caught up to the two lotus at the top. Cevert who had problems with the tires, retired on lap 62 behind Hulme. The New Zealander finished on the top group and overtook on lap 71 Fittipaldi, who was suddenly slowed down due to a gearbox problem and failed a short time later. Four laps to go came Hulme also to Stewart into second place.

On the penultimate lap proved Hulmes decision to start on the harder tires than most competitors, to be correct. He overtook Peterson, whose softer tires were no longer competitive and therefore snatched the tangible home win.
