Background
The Grand Prix of the United States should be the 100th and final Grand Prix of the third time fixed as world champion Jackie Stewart. Eagerly the duel for second place between Emerson Fittipaldi and François Cevert well as the output in the Constructors' Championship was expected. Lotus and Tyrrell had more chances for the title in this case.
Some teams traveled with three vehicles. McLaren fired again to Jody Scheckter and Chris Amon two weeks at Tyrrell was previously engaged as third driver as already at the Grand Prix of Canada. Shadow reported a third Trailer for Brian Redman, who thus came to his only Grand Prix use this year. Jochen Mass, however, already made its third appearance at the wheel of an additional Surtees. Clay Regazzoni returned to the BRM factory team. At the wheel of the third factory Brabham Rolf Stommelen by John Watson was represented.
The space in the second car of Frank Williams received the former Ferrari race seat with Jacky Ickx this weekend.
Training
Despite an accident Ronnie Peterson drove in Friday's training the fastest lap time, remained the only driver under 1:40 min. and thus demonstrated his ambition to reach the ninth pole position of the season, which in those days was a record.
During training on Saturday morning François Cevert crashed at high speed. He collided with a crash barrier and was killed instantly Due to this sad news the motivation of the other riders fell, so no more undercutting established by Peterson on the previous day lap time and the Swede actually again reached the pole position. Next to him, Carlos Reutemann started from the front row. Behind the Emerson Fittipaldi and James Hunt shared the second row.
Race
The Team Tyrrell decided to withdraw out of respect for his fatally injured drivers François Cevert the two remaining cars by Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon from the rest of the race weekend. In order for the constructors' world championship was automatically decided in favor of Lotus.
Peterson continued his poles into a leadership that he did not relinquish it until the finish. Behind Hunt passed in the fifth round Reutemann, and took second place. Denis Hulme got to Mike Hailwood and Emerson Fittipaldi past to fourth place.
Peterson could not settle much of Hunt during the whole race. Reutemann followed, however, by far. Fittipaldi fell through a pit stop, he had to make after he damaged his tires during a sudden braking. This was necessary to avoid the rotating Jody Scheckter.
Until recently James Hunt saw chances to win, but ultimately crossed scarce six tenths of a second behind Peterson the finish line.
