1977 Women's European Volleyball Championship

The European Women's Volleyball in 1977 took place from 25 September to 2 October in Finland. The Games were held in Tampere, Kotka, Lahti and Turku. The GDR only lost in the final of the Soviet Union, who won the title for the ninth time.

Mode

The twelve participants were divided into the first round in two groups of six. The group winners and runners reached the semi-finals. The other teams played to the ranks of five to twelve.

The GDR played with Catherine Bullinger, Barbara Czekalla, Andrea Hahn, G. Langanki, A. Mattke, Monika Meissner, Christine Mummhardt, Helga Open, Cornelia Rickert, G. Schrödter, Annette Schultz and Anke Westendorf.

Qualification

Finland was set as host. The top five teams in the European championship in 1975 were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as the defending champion, the second of Hungary, the GDR Third, the Fourth, the Fifth Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria.

Six other teams reached the finals via qualifiers. In Bari, Yugoslavia and Italy prevailed against France and Turkey. Success also were the West German selection, the Netherlands, Poland and Romania.
