First in the season 1980 /81 German Bundesliga and thus German master of men was the FC Bayern Munich.

Season overview

On the 25th match day, the 25th of March 1981 played the league leaders HSV against the second-placed defending champions Bayern Munich, who at this time had three points behind. Up to 66 minutes of HSV led through goals from Felix Magath and Horst Hrubesch 2-0 and could have extended his lead to five points with this result. But Bayern were able to make before the finish with goals by Karl -Heinz Rummenigge in the 67th minute and Paul Breitner one minute. The HSV subsequently lost in Dortmund 2:6. On the 28th matchday of the FC Bayern broke the HSV off as the leader and was able to defend at the end of four points clear his title as German champions.

The TSV 1860 München managed in the home game against Fortuna Dusseldorf 4-3 victory after they were still back in the 60th minute with 0:3. Goal scorer was, inter alia, Rudi Völler. The Munich "Lions" also rose due to a 2:3 defeat (after 2-1 lead in the 88th minute) on 30 match day direct competitors from Arminia Bielefeld.
