1979–80 DFB-Pokal

DFB Cup winner 1980, after the success in the previous year and participating in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1979, they had achieved as a finalist in 1978, again Fortuna Dusseldorf. It was the first title for Otto Rehhagel. As surprises of the competition following the resignation of the previous year finalist Hertha BSC against amateur club TuS 08 Langerwehe in the third round with 1:2 and also in the third round were the resignation of Bayern Munich 0-1 at the SpVgg Bayreuth and the HSV with 0: 2 in Offenbach.

In the subsequent third consecutive participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup Düsseldorf eliminated in the quarter- final against the Portuguese Cup winner Benfica and thus could not reach the final in the domestic Rhine Stadium.
