2001–02 DFB-Pokal

DFB Cup winner in 2002 was the FC Schalke 04 in the final at the Olympiastadion Berlin Schalke could defend the title with a 4-2 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 11 May 2002. Bayer Leverkusen missed this season within a few weeks the German Championship and the possible victory in the DFB Cup final and the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid 1:2 in Glasgow. The National Leverkusen players Ballack, Butt, Ramelow, Schneider and Neuville also missed the victory in the World Cup final.

Since Schalke was qualified as a trophy winner and fifth in the championship double for the UEFA Cup, Werder Bremen was declared the third German participants in the UEFA Cup. In the UEFA Cup 2002/ 03 failed Schalke in the third round at the Polish Cup winner Wisla Krakow, while Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League 2002/ 03 reached the second group stage.
