2002–03 UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League 2002/ 03 was the 11th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 48th overall.

With Zhenis Astana this season was the first time a representative from Kazakhstan at the start, after the bandage was changed from the AFC to UEFA 2002. Overall, however, as last year was attended by 72 teams from 48 member associations, since this season, no team from Azerbaijan took. The countries in the squares 1-3 UEFA five year ranking, posted four, in the squares 4-6 three and squares 7-15 two teams in the competition.

The final took place on 28 May 2003 at Old Trafford in Manchester and was won instead of within Italy duel AC Milan 0-0 after extra time and 3-2 in the penalty shootout against Juventus.

Mode

With the occupation of the groups, there was due to the changes in rankings in the UEFA five year ranking compared to the pre-season minor changes. For the first group stage were qualified from Spain three teams (including defending champion Real Madrid); the fourth Spanish representatives started in the third qualifying round. From Italy and England, two teams were ever qualify and two launched in the third qualifying round. From Germany, France and the Netherlands (seats 4-6 ), two teams were also set for the group stage and one team competed in the third qualifying round. From Greece, Russia and Turkey ( places 7-9 ), a team in the group stage were each set and one team competed in the third qualifying round. Belgium, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Czech Republic and Ukraine (seats 10-15 ) sent one team each in the 2nd and one team in the third qualifying round.

In the first group stage with 4 teams was played in 8 groups. The respective First and Second in each group qualified for the second group stage. The third in each group were allowed to play in the UEFA Cup 2002/ 03. In the second group stage à 4 teams was played in 4 groups. Qualification

First qualifying round

The first legs took place on July 17, the return legs on 24 July 2002 instead.

Second qualifying round

The first legs took place on 7 August 2002 on 31 July, the return games.

Third qualifying round

The first legs took place on 13-14. August, the return matches on 27-28. August 2002 instead.

First group stage

The 16 winners of the third qualifying round were dissolved together with the masters of the 10 highest lined up state associations and the second-placed teams from countries ranked 1-6 UEFA five year ranking in 8 groups of 4 teams each. For each group, the two best teams came into the second group stage, while the third-placed teams continued to play in the 3rd round of the UEFA Cup in 2002/ 03. The last group were excluded from European competitions.

Second group stage

The eight group winners and runners- were drawn into four groups of the second group stage, which accounted for two- group first and two runners-up in each group. The first- and second-placed each group reached the quarter-finals as usual.

The first legs were held on 6/7 May the return matches on 13-14. Of May 2003.

Final

It was in the competition's history only the second time since 1999/2000 that faced two teams from a country in the final.
