1973–74 European Cup

The European Champions Cup in 1973/74 was the 19th edition of the competition. 31 club teams participated, including 30 national champion of the previous season and with the defending champion Ajax Amsterdam.

For the Federal Republic took Bayern Munich, in part for the GDR Dynamo Dresden, for Wacker Innsbruck Austria and Switzerland FC Basel. In the 2nd round, there was the first German - German clash, this is when Bayern could just push through with 4:3 and 3:3 against Dresdner.

The participants played in the pure Cup mode (except for the final) round-trip games for the crown of European club football. Case of a tie, there was first extension, then, with the exception of the final, a penalty shoot-out. Except for the defending champions Ajax Amsterdam clubs started in the first round.

The finale was held at Heysel Stadium in Brussels before 49,000 spectators on 15 May 1974. In the first match between FC Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid score 1:1 after extra time, because Georg Schwarz Beck had scored in the 120th minute from a distance the equalizer. Five minutes before Atlético Madrid took the lead. On May 17, a replay was held. Here won the Bayern 4-0 and were the first German winner.

First round

Bye: Netherlands Ajax Amsterdam

The first legs took place on the 18th ( Reykjavik vs. Basle) and 19 September, the return matches on 20 September (Basel vs. Reykjavik) and October 3, 1973 instead.

2nd round

The first legs took place on October 24, the return matches on 6/7 November 1973 instead.

Quarterfinals

The first legs took place on 27 February (Basel vs. Glasgow ) and 5/6 March and the return matches on 20-21. Of March 1974.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on 10 April, the return legs on April 24, 1974.
