2000–01 UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League 2000 /01 was the ninth season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 46th overall.

It took a record number of 72 teams from 48 state associations in the competition, with countries that the numbers 1 - 15 were allowed to send two teams - 3 of UEFA's five-year rating of four, in the squares 4-6 three and squares 7. With NK Brotnjo Čitluk was the first time a representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the start.

The final took place on 23 May 2001 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan and was Bayern Munich against FC Valencia to a 1-1 win after extra time 5-4 on penalties.

Mode

Two teams 3 UEFA five year ranking ( Germany, Italy and Spain) qualified and two launched in the third qualifying round, with defending champion Real Madrid is not in the qualification round, but - for the first group stage were from the countries on the places 1 boarding the same in the group stage. From England, France and the Netherlands (seats 4-6 ), two teams were also set for the group stage and one team competed in the third qualifying round. From Greece, Portugal and Russia (seats 7-9 ), a team in the group stage were each set and one team competed in the third qualifying round. Denmark, Croatia, Austria, Czech Republic, Turkey and the Ukraine (seats 10-15 ) sent one team each in the 2nd and one team in the third qualifying round.

In the first group stage à 4 teams was played in 8 groups. The respective First and Second in each group qualified for the second group stage. The third in each group were allowed to play in the UEFA Cup 2000/ 01. In the second group stage à 4 teams was played in 4 groups. Qualification

First qualifying round

The first legs took place on 19 July 2000 on the 12th and the return games.

Second qualifying round

The first legs took place on 2 August 2000 on 26 July and the return games.

Third qualifying round

The first legs took place on 7./8./9. and the return matches on 22-23. August 2000 instead. The losers qualified for the first round of the UEFA Cup.

First group stage

The 16 winners of the third qualifying round were dissolved together with the masters of 9 highly lined up state associations and the second-placed teams from countries ranked 1-6 UEFA five year ranking as well as the defending champion in 8 groups of 4 teams each. The first and second in each group qualified for the second group phase; the third-placed teams played in the 3rd round of the UEFA Cup 2000/ 01 on.
