1978–79 European Cup

The European Champions' Cup 1978/79 was the 24th edition of the competition. 33 club teams participated, including 32 national champions from the previous season and with Liverpool, the defending champion.

The finale on May 30, 1979 at the Olympic Stadium in Munich Nottingham Forest won 1-0 against Malmö FF.

Mode

The participants played in the Cup mode with pure (except for the final) round-trip games for the crown of European club football. In Torgleichstand first counted the greater number of away goals scored; there was also this a tie, the second leg was extended and, if necessary, immediately then discharged a penalty shootout to decide.

Preliminary round

The first leg took place on August 16, the second leg on August 30, 1978 instead.

First round

The first legs were held on 13 September and the return matches on September 27, 1978 instead.

2nd round

The first legs took place on 1 November 1978 on 18 October, the return games.

Quarterfinals

The first legs were held on 6/7 March and the return matches on 21-22. (Rangers vs. Cologne) in March 1979 instead.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on April 25, 1979 April 11, the return games.
