John McGovern (footballer)

John McGovern (born 28 October 1949 in Montrose (Angus ), Scotland ) is a former Scottish footballer and football coach who was particularly known for his time with the English first division club Nottingham Forest, with which he in 1979 and 1980 won the European Champions Cup.

Playing career

John McGovern arrived in Scotland with the world, but moved at the age of seven years with his family to Hartlepool in England. There he began his professional career with 16 years at the regional club Hartlepools United. His discovery was the direct impersonated only as a coach to Hartlepool Brian Clough. Clough left the club again in 1967, but in the following season McGovern succeeded with his team's promotion to the third division. Then he followed his old coach in 1968 and moved to Derby County.

Derby County

Derby played in the second division, but McGovern managed already in the first season with his new team the leap to the top flight of English football. In the following six years he distinguished himself as a regular in his new club and celebrated 1971/72 its greatest success in the Football League First Division by winning the English Championship. Because the winner is he then played in the European Cup of Champions 1972/73 and failed there first in the semifinals at Juventus.

In 1974, he again followed his coach Brian Clough, who had left in the dispute with the Board of Derby County after the 1972/73 season. Clough took over for the season 1974/75 top English club Leeds United and immediately undertook his favorite player John McGovern. The new season mutated into a disaster, because Brian Clough fell out within a few weeks with board, crew, and fans of the new club and has already been released shortly after the beginning of the season. Nottingham Forest

In the 1976/77 season promotion to the first division and then the feat / win as promoted the English championship in the Football League First Division 1977 78. It was followed by the most successful period in the career McGovern, because in the two years following the triumph achieved in the European Cup of Champions 1978/79 and 1979 /80. Bolton Wanderers

The first season was an utter failure. In the 1984/85 season McGovern has been released during the current season and thus ended his playing career.

Coaching career

After his first start was not crowned in the coaching career of success, he became an assistant coach at Plymouth Argyle and later to Hull City. Only in 1994 he again took a position as head coach at third division Rotherham United and left that post in 1997 to train the Woking FC for one season.
