1960–61 European Cup

The European Cup of Champions 1960/61, was the sixth edition of the competition. 28 club teams participated, including 27 national champions from the previous season and with the defending champion Real Madrid. However, ultimately came to only 26 reported associations, two waived before hosting the first round.

The participants played in the pure Cup mode (except for the final) round-trip games for the crown of European club football. In Torgleichstand it came, regardless of the number of away goals to a playoff on neutral ground.

In the first round, the teams from German-speaking eliminated each other; while the winning team of Rapid Vienna and Hamburg SV then advanced to the semifinals. There it was in Vienna to a head when angry spectators in the return match against the eventual Cupgewinner stormed onto the lawn of the Prater stadium and a police action was necessary to protect the referee and the guest players; the encounter was then no longer kicks. - In Volksparkstadion the hamburgers were missing only a few seconds, then a West German club would be after 1960 again penetrated into the final - would not have Luis Suárez (CF Barcelona) achieved before over 70,000 spectators at the last minute even the score back to 1:2 and thus a play- enforced.

The final was then without German participation on May 30, 1961 at Wankdorf Stadium in Bern before nearly 27,000 spectators instead. It first saw another Cup winners Real Madrid. José Águas scorer of Benfica with eleven goals.

The first legs were held until March 22, the return matches from 15 March to 3 April 1961 by 18 January.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on 12./26. April and the return legs on April 26 / 4 May 1961 instead.
