1981 UCI Road World Championships

The UCI Road World Championships 1981 took place from August 26 to 30 in the Czechoslovak capital Prague.

Racing

Starting point of the road race was the Strahov Stadium for a round trip to 13.4 kilometers. The women had this route four times, the male amateurs 14 times and the professionals handle 21 times. The course had a few hills, but many curves, but was according to the experts to easily and non-selective. The route for the team time trial resulted from Prague to Štechovice over a distance along the Vltava, starting point was the Tatra Smíchov Hall.

The Belgian Freddy Maertens was for the second time after 1976 world champion of professional drivers. In 1977, he was a bad fall at the Giro d' Italia, had then psychological and alcohol problems and needed two years to get back in shape. 69 of 112 riders started reaching the goal. Ten West German athletes were at the start, five came to the vote, of which Klaus -Peter Thaler accommodate twelve achieved the best result.

Positive for the squad of the Federal German cyclist was the world champion title for the 16 year old Active Ute Enzenauer in the road race of women, in which 75 drivers were started. Beate Habetz finished sixth, Ines Varenkamp 14, both also from the West German team. The magazine cycling, which had yet expressed in a few years previously rather critical of women's cycling, now confirmed "the steady upward trend that has taken in the Federal Republic of ladies cycling. Since 1978, since the women's competitions are fed regularly, there was always a medal for the riders to national coach Klaus Joerden ".

In the street single race of amateurs won Andrej Vedernikov from the Soviet Union. The team time trial was won by four of the GDR, while the West German road quad disappointing finished only 15th place.
