Background
For the second World Cup race of the year came at the same pilots who had already contested the season opener in Brazil.
The teams AGS and BMS each brought a new car at the start.
Training
Nicola Larini was excluded from the race weekend due to a non-compliant vehicle. Thus, because exactly 30 pilots took part in the training, could be dispensed with a pre-qualification.
The battle for the pole position was a duel between the two McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, which ruled the Brazilian with a shorter by about eight tenths of seconds lap time for themselves. The time interval to the third-placed Nelson Piquet was already at around 3.3 seconds. Alessandro Nannini qualified for the fourth place ahead of Gerhard Berger and Riccardo Patrese, who formed the third row.
Race
Michele Alboreto had to start from the pit lane after his engine was not started in time for the start of the formation lap.
During Prost's engine almost threatened to go out at the start, Senna managed a perfect start. He then held the lead until the finish.
Prost, who was initially dropped to sixth place behind Piquet, Patrese, Nannini and Berger, fought his way up to the eighth round back up to second place forward. The McLaren pilots achieved a double victory unchallenged. Nelson Piquet was third. The fourth place was taken by Thierry Boutsen and Alessandro Nannini in front of Gerhard Berger.
