Background

The weekend after the Grand Prix of Portugal was held the 14th World Cup race of the year in Spain with an unchanged driver line-up.

Training

As so often this season the front row by Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost was formed. Nigel Mansell shared the second row with Thierry Boutsen. It was followed by Alessandro Nannini and Ivan Capelli. After a dangerous maneuver against Julian Bailey, that led to an accident of the British, the seventh- placed Riccardo Patrese was sentenced to a fine.

Race

While Prost took the lead, fell behind Senna Mansell back to third place. This seemed the first Brazilian noticeably reside, so that Prost was able to pull a gap.

Irritated by misreporting his fuel gauge, Senna was slower, so Capelli and Patrese were able to catch up. In the 36th round Capelli moved past him, but soon resigned due to technical problems. Nannini, meanwhile, had overtaken his compatriot Patrese and came in round 48 on Senna passed on to third place.

Alain Prost won ahead of Nigel Mansell, Alessandro Nannini, Ayrton Senna, Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger. Due to the then valid void results rule Prost was not the usual nine, but only three points and thus as many as his championship rival Senna for fourth place for his victory.
