Qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup 1999

The qualifying matches for the World Cup of women in 1999 were held until December 19, 1998 July 19, 1997.

88 organizations had signed up for the World Cup. But only 71 teams were able to start in the actual World Cup qualifiers. For the UEFA sorted from 18 European teams play weak, so to speak, already played a pre-qualification for the World Cup 2003. As the host of USA was automatically qualified for the World Cup finals, and withdrew three African teams fought a total of 67 teams to 15 finals places. All qualification options include either the Championship or the Cup system.

European Zone / UEFA

The teams were divided into two classes on the power. The strong teams in Class A and the weaker teams in Class B.

Class A: 16 teams playing in four groups of four of the six finalists of the 1999 World Cup. The four group winners qualified directly for the World Cup finals, the four runners determined in two playoffs two more participants.

Class B: 18 teams played in two groups of four and two groups of five. The four group winners of the B- Checkout played a relegation against the four group last of the A-Class. The four winners of the relegation qualified for the A-Class to the World Cup qualifiers for the World Cup 2003. Everyone in the B-Class had no way to qualify for the 1999 World Cup already.

South America / CONMEBOL

The South American Championship in Mar del Plata ( Argentina) served as a World Cup qualifier. For two groups of five, the two group winners and runners-up qualify for the semi-final CONMEBOL. The South American champions was the World Cup qualifying in the U.S. in 1999. The runner-up played against CONCACAF runner to another World Cup finals place.

As the CONCACAF qualifying tournament Women's Championship served from August 28 to September 6, 1998 in Etobicoke and Scarborough in Canada. The winners qualified for the World Cup. The runner-up played against the second in the South American qualifiers, two play-off matches in the World Cup. The USA qualified automatically as host of the World Cup and did not participate in the tournament.

Asian Zone / AFC

The Asian Championships in women's football served as World Cup qualifiers.

Eleven teams took part, was played in two groups of four and a group of three. The semi-finals were the three group winners plus the best runners. The two finalists and the Asia Third qualified for the 1999 World Cup in the USA.

All matches were played as a tournament in China.

African Zone / CAF

15 African teams determined during a tournament in Nigeria from 17 to 30 October 1998 African champions and also the representative of Africa at the 1999 Women's World Cup. With In Namibia, Kenya, Sierra Leone and Mozambique, attracted a total of four of the fifteen nations to participate in the course the tournament back.
