2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup

The 17 U-20 World Cup 2009 (until 2005 Junior World Cup ) was held in the period from 24 September to 16 October, 2009 Egypt. The country hosted the tournament for the first time. 24 teams came first in groups and then in playoff games against each other. Defending champion was the team from Argentina, which, however, surprisingly failed to qualify for the tournament.

In the final, Ghana was able to beat the four -time world champion Brazil on penalties. For the first time an African country won the Junior World Championship title. Third place went to Hungary, which could also defeat on penalties in Costa Rica. The German team was eliminated in the quarterfinals to eventual finalists Brazil. Austria and Switzerland failed to qualify for the World Cup finals themselves.

The World Cup matches took place in five cities of Egypt in seven stages.

Qualification

In the final competition of 24 teams competed, with 23 places were offered by the individual U-19 and U -20 Continental Championships. Hosts Egypt was already qualified from the outset for the final round.

The European body UEFA were six places available, these were awarded at the U- 19 Championship 2008 in the Czech Republic. The teams that ranked in the top three of their respective group after the group stage, were qualified for the finals.

The Asian Football Association AFC had four starting positions. As a qualifying tournament this was the U-19 Asia Cup in 2008, which was hosted by Saudi Arabia. The four semi-finalists Australia, South Korea, Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates represented the Asian continent in Egypt.

From the CONCACAF, the football association of North America and the Caribbean, four teams at the CONCACAF U- 20 Championship qualified in March 2009 in Trinidad and Tobago. The semi-finalists Costa Rica, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago and the USA had qualified for the World Cup.

From the African Football Federation CAF qualified addition to the already set hosts Egypt four more teams. As a qualifying tournament this was the U-20 African Cup of 2009 in Rwanda, in which Ghana was able to secure the title. Furthermore, the qualified teams from Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa.

The South American federation CONMEBOL had four starting places at the World Cup; these were awarded at the U- 20 Football Championship 2009 in South America Venezuela to Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. Surprisingly failed the defending champion Argentina without a single victory.

The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC ) found their participants at the U- 20 Football Ozeanienmeisterschaft in December 2008 in Tahiti, where the host was able to secure the victory and the qualification itself.

The draw for the final six groups of junior football World Championship 2009 took place in the temples of Luxor City on April 5, 2009. The following groups emerged: The first round was held in six groups of four teams. The six group winners and runners-up and the four best third qualified for the knockout stages.
