Title 2046

The number " 2046 " has several meanings in the film, it refers to:

  • The title of science fiction novel, which is written by Chow
  • The name of the fictional town of this novel
  • The number of the room in the " Oriental Hotel " in Hong Kong, where Lulu and later live Bai Ling. In addition, Chow does in the previous film In the Mood for Love a room with Su Li- Zhen ( another Su Li- Zhen as in this film ) with the same room number. Since the filming of both films were superimposed in part, to director Kar-Wai decided spontaneously to enter the room from In the Mood for Love, the number of different movie title. In the two originally planned as independent projects films, eventually formed out connections, so Kar-Wai, the two films referred to as " two chapters of a book ."
  • The year in which Hong Kong is losing its special status within the People's Republic of China. The Chinese government pledged to the year 1996/97, that would not change anything on the status in the next 50 years. 2046 would therefore be the last year in which this assurance is still valid.

Reviews

" Again, the director has a virtuoso on the vocabulary of cinema, the camera elicits a hypnotic motion and places the images in a gentle, dreamy assembly. Tony Leung and his companions seem to float through the film. That 2046 seems almost kadriert more rigorous, not least the Cinemascope format owes. It reinforces the sculptural effect of fragmentation, Wong subjecting the faces and bodies. This concentration and recess gives the compositions a unique melodramatic precision. "

" Wong Kar- wai 's new film is undoubtedly his most sentiment Alster. And yet he celebrates the nostalgic look back on such a compromise, passionate way that you long after seeing the film feels a certain contempt for all the silly, happy functioning ones of the present. "

" The individual narratives tear off, reflect and extend in the sci-fi sequences later, they suddenly appear again. [ ... ] This movie does not care about realism and plausibility, it creates forms and images for non- identity. Herein Wong reached a virtuosity that is unparalleled. "

" An intoxicating eulogy to the power of longing love that weaves with associative cascade picture, dialogue and scraps of thought and a wistful music a melancholic narrative tapestry, whose fragmentary stories revolve around loss and grief. The masterful film passage through time and space borders on the unconscious. "
