( 2217 ) Eltigen is an asteroid of the outer main belt, discovered by Soviet astronomer Tamara Smirnova on September 26, 1971 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj (IAU code 095). Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid there had been before: on June 10, 1942 ( 1942 LG) at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg, on 24 March 1958 ( 1958 FJ ) at the Heidelberg State Observatory king chair, on 10 July 1959 ( 1959 NP ) at the Goethe Link Observatory, Indiana and 1970 (1970 LD) at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj.

The asteroid has an average diameter of 26.10 km ( ± 1.9 ). Its albedo of 0.1242 (± 0.020 ) is comparable to that of the Moon (0.12 ). The rotation period was during observations on 30 April and from May 3 to 5, 2009 at 50 -cm Ritchey -Chrétien telescope of the Oakley Southern Sky Observatorys (IAU code E09 ) in Coonabarabran, New South Wales with 6.924 (± 0.003 ) hours to be determined.

( 2217 ) Eltigen part of the Themis family, a group of asteroids, which was named after ( 24) Themis. The timeless ( nichtoskulierenden ) orbital elements of ( 2217 ) Eltigen are almost identical to those of the smaller, if we start from the absolute brightness of 14.4 against 11.3, asteroid ( 60062 ) 1999 TE119.

( 2217 ) Eltigen was named after the small town Eltigen at 1 March 1981, a landing point of the Kerch - Eltigener operation in which the Red Army in November 1943 prepared the reconquest of the Crimea peninsula.
