29er (boat)

The 29er is a skiff for adults and adolescents. The boat is a one-design boat, that is, all the boats are identical, from the sail to the hull.

History

Designed by Australian Julian Bethwaite, 1998, the first copies of the 29ers were built in strip construction. It was designed as a smaller version of the Olympic 49er to offer the young sailors a suitable boat for getting started. 2001, the 29ers of the ISAF was selected as a two-handed boat for the World Youth Championships, which were held in Canada in 2002. Meanwhile, the 29er is manufactured under license in England, Canada, Argentina, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. Since 2005, the 29er is a DSV Youth Cup class in Germany and was allowed to deliver his first International German Championship in 2008, as in the ranking more than 60 teams are out. Many clubs therefore replace their 420 dinghy or pirate by the modern 29er. In 2008, the ISAF replaced the 420s by the 29er class at the ISAF Youth Boot Worlds.

Hull

The hull is made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (GRP ) in full sandwich construction with double bottom. The hulls are built in Europe by Ovingtonboats.

Rig, rigging, sails

The mast is made of aluminum - carbon fiber composite material and is divisible in triplicate. The jib is self tacking, that is, once set for the cross- Fock must not be operated at a turning point, but automatically changes the position for the new course. To this end, the boat has a fully battened mainsail, which is driven out of the hand and a gennaker for half wind to downwind courses. The sails are (such as windsurfing ) made of sheet material. Only the gennaker is made of lightweight material like other spinnaker.

Sailing in the 29er

When 29ers only the foredeck is in harness, while the helmsman sitting depends Ausreitgurt. The 29er is to maintain due to its shape compared to other dinghies heavy upright. The ideal weight of the crew is between 100 and 145 kg, depending on the mass, the team has an advantage in a lot or a little wind.

The 29er was designed especially for newcomers to the ( Skiff ) sailing. It is against the pirates or the 420 dinghy from the handling to sail partly serious, but more agile and faster - the record is now over 25 knots. The Gennakersystem and the self-tacking jib facilitate sailing.

On upwind, the boat is kept upright by weight trimming and using the trapezoid from the foredeck, the helmsman steers the boat. Since the self-tacking jib must not be operated, the bowman on the cross can also use the mainsail. On downwind and half wind course this serves the gennaker, the helmsman takes over the mainsail.

29erXX

The 29erXX consists of the same hull as the classic 29er and differs by a larger rig with two trapezoids. As with the classic 29er rig foil sails are used, except that the gennaker at the top of the mast on. The 29erXX was originally designed to be an Olympic women's boat, almost as a 49er for women.
