88th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 88th Infantry Division was a military major unit of the Wehrmacht.

Division history

The Division was established on 1 December 1939 and equipped with Czech weapons. At first she was placed under the 9th Army from 1941 and the 7th Army. For both armies, she worked in the West. On December 23, 1941, she received reinforcements from the 205th Infantry Division.

In 1942, she came as part of the 2nd Army on the Eastern Front. The division among other events, the Battle of Kharkov. In the winter of 1942/43, they came in the Battle of Voronezh used. In the spring of 1943, she was withdrawn after Sumy, where they supported the Operation Citadel as part of the 4th Panzer Army. Then it was transferred to the 8th Army and ran into the Battle of the Dnieper.

As a result, she was forced in early 1944 of the 1st Ukrainian Front in the boiler at Cherkassy. In the winter of 1944/45, it was smashed with Army Group A in the course of the Vistula-Oder operation.
