  • 953: After the numerous uprisings of his brothers Otto the Great elevates his younger brother Brun Archbishop of Cologne and Duke of Lorraine; Beginning of the Ottonian and Salian imperial church system, which eventually leads to the Investiture Controversy.
  • 953: The ailing Roman bridge over the Rhine at Cologne of 310 will be demolished. It will take over 900 years to 1855 again, a solid bridge over the Rhine at Cologne.
  • Otto I the Great, is victorious on August 10, 955 on the cavalry of the Hungarians at the Battle of Lechfeld ( near Augsburg ). This ends the more than 50 years of Hungarian invasions.
