Formation

The album is Scofield's first collaboration with the trio Medeski, Martin & Wood. His daughter had made it to the group, which, he hired then as his rhythm section. When he decided to cooperate, he called on the group: " At first we thought this can not be true. Someone has the invented. But it was really his voice. Of course, it was great feeling that someone like Scofield is calling us to participate on his album. "

According to John Medeski Scofield has benefited more from the trio ", at least for the United States. Most American musicians in Europe only the opportunity to make creative music, but we can do it here. In Europe, no one knows us, and therefore we have there is likely to benefit more by Scofield's name. "

The album was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York City.

Content

The songs of the album are very different among themselves; during Chank is very influenced by the radio, the interlude Kubrick is a " quiet respite ." Together they form " a musical fireworks display of original compositions and adventurous improvisations that is unrivaled. "

Reception

According to the magazine Jazzthetik in the 1990s, " already counted almost past John Scofield " managed with this album a "comeback". On this album, " Scofield gets the chance to play as funky as he sometimes finds himself " ( as Tim DiGravina in his review for Allmusic ), while MMWs " dahinschlängelnde grooves are structured by Scofield's guitar playing ."

The constant reinvention of Scofield's style is praised both generally and specifically in the A Go Go. The website jazztimes.com compares this collaboration with the guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Bill Evans, as well as with that of Jimmy Nolen and James Brown. Allmusic praises Scofield's guitar playing as " sleepwalker safe weaving in the sound power of the young trio". The jazz magazine Down Beat gave the album in his review, however, only three and a half out of five.
