Billy Martin (percussionist)

Billy Martin ( b. 1962 in New York City, New York) is an American drummer and percussionist of the jazz trio Medeski, Martin & Wood.

Despite a childhood in a musical home ( his father was a classical violinist is ) Martin began at the age of eleven years, and after moving to New Jersey to play the drums. 1981 Martin moved back to Manhattan and began to work for various bands as a drummer, especially in the New York scene for Brazilian music. In addition, Martin collaborated with bands and musicians ( with Bob Moses and John Lurie's "The Lounge Lizards " and " National Orchestra "). In particular, cooperation with Lurie's band influenced his drumming style. Moses, however, became for him a kind of drum mentor, and together they took 1984 Moses ' duet album "Drumming Birds " on. Bob Moses was also the Billy Martin introduced her to two other musicians with whom he toured previously by Israel: John Medeski and Chris Wood. In 1991, the three musicians, the trio Medeski, Martin & Wood.

For Martin as soloists collaborations followed with the likes of John Zorn, John Scofield or Iggy Pop and DJ Logic.

In addition to his work as a drummer, Martin also operated as a graphic designer and illustrator. In addition to painting and drawing, he devotes, for example, the illustration of Medeski, Martin & Wood albums.

In 2006, the musician his own label Indirecto, on the album "Out Louder " by Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood appeared.
