Abdirahman Farole

Abdirahman Mohamed " Farole " ( * 1942; letters in Somali: Cabdiraxham Maxamad Farole ) was elected on 8 January 2009 President of the de facto autonomous region of Puntland in northeastern Somalia.

He comes from the region Nugaal. In the 1990s he was at the time of the UN mission in Somalia governor of his region. In Puntland, which in 1998 declared itself an autonomous region within Somalia, he was Minister of Finance from time to time.

Due to differences with the then President of Puntland Mohamud Muse Hersi he was from early 2006 to the leader of the opposition in Puntland. For Abdirahman Mohamed Farole and a half years living in Australia, where he earned a PhD at La Trobe University. The end of 2008, he returned.

January 8, 2009 Farole was elected by the parliament of Puntland with 49 of 66 votes. He announced a new constitution and the introduction of a multiparty system. He also promised to promote the social development to introduce a kind of welfare system to improve security and combat piracy off the coast of Somalia, which mainly comes from Puntland.
